The realtor had said the house was a "fixer-upper." Sarah now understood the understatement. Behind a loose panel in the basement, she found a door. This door was so well-concealed she had not suspected it. Her stomach lurched as she pulled it open, revealing a spiral staircase descending into absolute blackness.

Her knees threatened to buckle. She gripped the cold metal railing, her knuckles white. She couldn’t breathe. A wave of nausea washed over her.

She shone her phone’s light downwards. The steps seemed to go on forever. She heard something - a faint drip, drip, drip. Her hand began to tremble, and she felt a sense of panic rising within her. Turning away felt impossible, as though she was being held by an invisible force.
