The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the muted grey background. Ancestry.com. She’d always figured it would be a fun curiosity, a way to connect with distant relatives. Instead, the results screamed betrayal. Zero percent Irish. Zero percent Scottish. Her entire identity, built on tales of blustery ancestors and ancient clans, fractured.

Her hands shook as she stared at the screen, a cold sweat beading on her forehead. She felt a desperate urge to rip the computer from its moorings and hurl it across the room. The world swam. The cozy, familiar living room suddenly seemed alien, the sunlight hitting the furniture with an unfamiliar harshness.

A choked sob escaped her. She needed air. Grabbing her keys, she bolted out the door, the flimsy screen door slamming shut behind her with a violent crack. The carefully cultivated rose bushes in the front yard seemed to leer at her, their thorns now sinister.
