The email, subject line: "Important Financial Documents," lay open on the computer screen. Sarah had found it in Mark's deleted items, a detail she now felt ashamed of, but it was too late. He'd clearly forgotten it, a slip of the mind. Attached were bank statements, statements she had never seen. She felt a cold sweat prickling at her skin.

She scrolled down, her finger trembling on the mouse. The sum… it was ludicrous. Enough to buy a small island. Enough to do *anything*. She reread the email, her chest constricting. She felt a burning sensation, a terrible hollowness that threatened to swallow her whole.

Her mind raced, replaying every shared decision, every financial discussion they’d had. His careful explanations of their financial situation, her trust, her devotion. She wanted to scream. She wanted to run. She stared at the screen, unable to breathe.
