Gemotions

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Mr. Henderson's request – to chop down the ancient oak that straddled their property line – struck a physical blow. A cold dread seeped into Amelia’s bones, and her hands clenched into fists, nails digging into her palms.

"But… the squirrels," she stammered, her voice thin and reedy. Her gaze darted from Mr. Henderson’s bland face to the majestic tree, its branches reaching like supplicating arms towards the sky. The thought of it, felled, splintered, reduced to firewood, twisted in her stomach.

She forced a shaky smile, the muscles in her face refusing to cooperate. “It’s such a… a lovely tree.” The words felt inadequate, hollow, like echoes in a vast emptiness where the oak once stood. Her breath hitched.
