A tremor ran through Daniel as he saw the lilies. Their pristine white petals were a stark contrast to the dull, beige of his apartment. The sheer audacity of it left him speechless. Flowers. Who? Why? His heart hammered against his ribs.

He backed away, bumping into the counter. He had been careful, so very careful, for years. This… this was a blatant disruption of the quiet. He felt the familiar knot tighten in his stomach. He didn’t want them. He didn’t want any reminders.

He spun on his heel and rushed to the window, peering out at the street below. No one. Nothing. Just the mundane, everyday life he had so desperately tried to blend into. He forced himself to take a deep breath, and failed.
