The invitation to the ceremony was in an ornate envelope, addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Blake." Inside was a formal invitation to witness their daughter, Jessica, become a member of a Wiccan coven. He felt a shiver run down his spine, a primal unease. He tossed the invitation onto the kitchen counter.

His wife was looking at it, with a gentle concern. He had to bite back the words that threatened to spill out. The sense of violation was acute, almost physical. He grabbed his coat and keys, the abrupt movement startling his wife. He needed air, needed to get away from the house and the encroaching sense of otherness.
