The news came through a text. His brother, Michael, was now a Scientologist. He dropped his phone, the device hitting the floor with a hollow thud. He let out a harsh laugh, a short, humorless sound. Michael, the logical, pragmatic one. The one who had always mocked their religious upbringing. He kicked the discarded phone across the room.

He felt a burning sensation in his chest, a tight knot of disbelief and anger. He needed to understand, to know why, but the words wouldn't form. He picked up the phone, and then threw it against the wall, smashing it to pieces. He wanted to break something, to destroy something in order to alleviate the pressure.
