A vein throbbed in Susan’s temple. "You said you found it funny. You were *laughing*." Across the small kitchen table, Mark just shrugged, his expression infuriatingly blank.

The subject was their disastrous attempt at baking a cake for their mother's birthday. Susan remembered the smoke, the burnt mess, the ensuing argument. Mark seemed to recall only the general chaos with a lighthearted perspective.

Susan pushed back her chair, the sound grating against her teeth. She stood, her chest tight. "I need some air." She couldn't stand being in the same room as him any longer, with his blithe denial and infuriating lack of empathy.
