“This is ridiculous,” Martin muttered, slamming the book down on the counter. The old woman behind the desk barely looked up from her knitting. He felt his cheeks flush.

A folded note, pale with age, slid out as the book landed. He picked it up, feeling his face screw up in disgust. He hated this.

He recognized the handwriting from somewhere, a distant memory that he wanted to banish forever. The letter spoke of stolen moments, shared secrets. It was a calculated act of cruelty.

Martin ripped the letter apart, a savage grin spreading across his face. He tossed the pieces into the trash can. He needed to get out of the store. He needed to get away from… everything.
