The discovery sent a wave of icy dread through Clara. She reread the pages, a coldness creeping up her spine, then she threw the book across the living room with a furious cry. Every line was a needle, puncturing her carefully constructed self-image. It was all so…wrong.

She stalked into their bedroom, the silk sheets suddenly repulsive under her fingertips. She ripped the cushions from the bed, throwing them against the wall, her movements abrupt and violent.

She had to escape. The suffocating weight of his words, of his observations, was pressing down on her. Grabbing her suitcase, she started throwing clothes into it. She would leave him to his book, to his judgment. She didn't have time for this betrayal.
