A tremor ran through David’s hands as his sister, Sarah, declared her intention to embrace Islam. The words, delivered with a radiant smile, felt like a slap in the face. His carefully constructed life, built on familial conformity, felt threatened. He felt the weight of everyone’s eyes in the crowded living room.

He cleared his throat, his voice cracking, and attempted a congratulatory tone. “That’s… that’s great, Sarah.” His words sounded hollow, even to his own ears. He took a long swig of his soda, the fizz doing little to quench the dryness in his throat.

The subsequent questions from his Aunt Maria felt like needles piercing his defenses. “What about the Christmas traditions? The family dinners?” Each query, seemingly innocent, felt like a public indictment of his sister’s choices.
