"I'm joining the Hare Krishnas," Amelia's daughter announced, a beatific expression on her face. Amelia felt a cold wash over her, like ice water dumped down her back. The meticulously planned birthday party, with its pastel decorations and carefully curated guest list, suddenly felt like a joke.

She plastered on a smile, her cheeks aching with the effort. "That's... interesting, darling." Her voice sounded thin, almost a squeak. She watched, frozen, as her daughter began to explain the chanting and vegetarianism, oblivious to the storm brewing within her.

Amelia found herself retreating to the kitchen, the brightly lit space suddenly feeling claustrophobic. She stared at the overflowing buffet table, the catered food now repulsive.
