The gravel crunched beneath Sarah’s boots as she approached the empty patch of concrete. Her chest felt constricted, making it difficult to breathe. Her father was coming to visit this weekend. She had been so proud of the new paint job, the way the sunlight caught the curves of her vintage Thunderbird. Now, nothing.

She pictured her parents' disappointed faces. She imagined their pointed questions, the veiled accusations. She closed her eyes, fighting back the sting of unshed tears. She'd have to call them. Explain. The very thought made her skin crawl. She wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out.
