The silence in the garage was deafening. Jennifer stared at the empty space, her breath caught in her throat. Her car, the dependable family SUV, was gone. Her neighbor, Mr. Henderson, was in his yard, pretending to prune roses. His knowing glance was a physical blow.

She and her husband were already behind on the bills. The thought of the tow fees and impound charges left her feeling weak-kneed. She didn’t know how she would explain this to her kids. She rubbed her temples, trying to ward off the throbbing headache that was quickly developing.
