Liam was caught off guard. His mother, beaming, had brought out the contents of an old trunk. The centerpiece was a collection of his childhood drawings. Each picture was a portal to a past he'd rather leave forgotten.

He felt his cheeks flush as his parents and grandparents marveled at his artwork. He remembered the frustration of never quite capturing what he saw in his mind's eye. Now, his failures were on display for all to see. He made a hasty exit to the kitchen.

He started furiously cleaning the dishes, finding a small measure of solace in the repetitive task.
