The gymnasium air felt thick, heavy with the stench of sweat and disappointment. Maya clutched the crumpled tryout results, her knuckles white. She’d pictured herself on the varsity squad, imagined the cheers, the victories, the feeling of belonging. Now, the paper declared her name absent, relegated to the junior varsity team.

A stinging heat flushed her cheeks. She forced a smile, a grotesque caricature of her usual confident grin, as Coach Peterson clapped her on the shoulder. His words of encouragement – “Keep working hard, Maya, you’ll get there” – felt like a cruel joke.

She turned, her legs feeling like lead, and began to walk away, the other athletes chatting and congratulating each other, oblivious to her inner turmoil. Each step was a battle against the urge to sprint away, to disappear.
