A wave of heat crashed over Mr. Davies. He smoothed down his thinning hair, a futile gesture against the burning blush creeping up his neck. The PTA meeting had been a disaster. He’d volunteered to organize the school's annual bake sale, a task he'd cheerfully undertaken until Mrs. Henderson, a parent notorious for her competitive spirit, had revealed that she was bringing in a triple-layered chocolate cake. Now, a delivery boy, all legs and awkwardness, stood before him, a gift basket in tow. He couldn’t meet the boy's eyes. It was from a student he once failed, a kid named Mark who'd barely passed algebra, a subject he now taught.

"For you, sir," the boy stammered, his cheeks the color of ripe tomatoes.

Mr. Davies mumbled a thank you, his voice cracking. He could feel everyone's eyes on him. The basket was filled with pre-packaged snacks – the cheapest ones available. He opened it, fighting back tears. A small, handwritten note was tucked inside. It read: “To Mr. Davies, because everyone deserves a break sometimes. – Mark." The absurdity, the unintentional cruelty, made his throat tighten.
