The email inbox taunted Ms. Rodriguez. Each ping was a fresh assault. The school board had just announced her termination. A new, younger teacher was taking over her position, a fate she’d felt creeping up on her for years. The students had all but ignored her for the last few months. Then, the email arrived, subject line: "From a Former Student." It was from Emily, one of her brightest pupils from her first year. Ms. Rodriguez felt a cold dread settle in her stomach.

She clicked the email open, and the screen illuminated the words. It was a link to a blog post, a gushing account of Emily's successful career and how Ms. Rodriguez’s lessons had inspired her. Attached to the post was a photograph. It was a picture of the teacher, looking frumpy and out of touch, taken during a class field trip. A single comment, left by a reader, read, "She looks tired." Ms. Rodriguez closed her eyes. The shame was a physical weight, pressing her into her chair.
