She opened the door to find the florist’s assistant standing there, a large basket of wildflowers in her arms. A silent greeting. No message. She took the basket, and watched as the assistant returned to the delivery van. The sun felt harsh.

She carried them inside, not knowing what to do with them. She didn’t know who they were from. The thought sent a cold shiver down her spine. The basket was placed on the floor in her entryway.

She stood there, paralyzed, the silence of the house pressing in on her. She felt exposed, vulnerable. She wanted to run, to hide. She turned and went to her bedroom, shutting the door behind her, and fell onto the bed.
