Her eyes stung. She watched the workers effortlessly carry heavy beams, their movements full of purpose. She had no purpose. Every morning, she felt a hollow emptiness. The project next door was a constant reminder of everything she lacked, everything she'd lost.

She sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creaks oddly comforting. She hadn’t ventured out of the house much lately, preferring the dimness and quiet of the interior. The bright sunlight seemed to mock her. A tear traced a path down her cheek.
