The letter arrived in the mail, a crisp, official document that felt like a slap in the face. It had been weeks since she submitted her application, weeks of waiting, of hopeful anticipation. Now, it was over.

She read the letter twice, then a third time, hoping the words would change. They didn’t. She closed her eyes, imagining the disappointment on her parents' faces. She closed the letter and tossed it on the table.

She walked into the bathroom, staring at her reflection. Her face was pale, and her eyes, usually bright, were now dull and lifeless. She turned on the tap, splashing cold water on her face, hoping to wash away the feeling.
