“What the hell?” Liam’s voice was a harsh whisper, laced with disbelief. He stood rooted to the spot, staring at the empty driveway. His jaw dropped.

He felt a sudden, sharp stab of coldness, a chill that had nothing to do with the morning air. He closed his eyes for a moment, hoping it was all a dream, a bad joke. But when he opened them, the emptiness remained.

He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it further. He felt a burning sensation in his eyes, a stinging pressure behind them. He wanted to collapse, to crumple to the ground. He had a bad feeling in his stomach, as if it was already trying to digest the day's events.
