The sterile smell of the hospital, usually a comfort, now felt like a suffocating blanket. Mark sat, stock still, in the waiting room. The nurse had just told him. The records… they weren’t his. The surgery he had prepared for was unwarranted.

His head pounded, and a strange buzzing sound filled his ears. His carefully constructed life, the one he had planned, was thrown into disarray. He had to stop this.

He focused on the tile floor, trying to ground himself. He wanted to scream. He wanted to shout. Instead, his mouth felt dry. He swallowed hard, trying to force down the bile rising in his throat.
