Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic drumming in Amelia's chest. She clutched the crumpled invitation, the glossy paper now soggy and limp. A cancellation notice. The words swam before her eyes. “Due to unforeseen circumstances…” The sentence trailed off, unfinished, just like her anticipation. She’d spent weeks agonizing over what to wear, a small, hopeful smile playing on her lips whenever she imagined the evening. Now, the thought of the dress hanging unworn in her closet felt like a personal affront. She kicked at the hem of her jeans.

Her phone buzzed, a cheerful notification sound that usually brought her joy, but now felt like a cruel mockery. A text from Sarah: “So sorry! Rain check?” Amelia slammed the phone onto the counter, the screen facing down. The apartment suddenly felt too large, the silence deafening. She wandered into the kitchen, aimlessly opening and closing cabinets, as if searching for a forgotten remedy. The leftover birthday cake from last year, still in the freezer, seemed to glare at her.
