He stared at the blank screen, the email's terse subject line - "Party Off" - burning into his retinas. Years of planning, of dropping hints, of quietly imagining the faces of his friends and family around him. All gone. He felt a hollowness in his chest, a deep ache that seemed to resonate throughout his entire being. It was the anniversary of the day he met his wife, and he had poured his heart and soul into this, he had planned a party to renew their vows.

He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a stray lock that flopped in front of his eye. The apartment, usually a haven of warmth and laughter, seemed to have taken on the cold, sterile aura of a hospital room. He pictured the invitations he had chosen with such care, the meticulous seating chart, the playlist he'd spent hours crafting. All now rendered obsolete. He threw the laptop against the wall, the sound echoing through the empty space.
