The balloon, now deflated and discarded in the corner, seemed to droop in sympathy. The email read, "Unable to proceed." Clara sat on the edge of the bed, the pastel colors of the streamers mocking her with their vibrancy. She had spent a month prepping. She’d wanted everything to be perfect. The thought of all the effort, the secret phone calls, the late-night crafting sessions, now reduced to nothing, sat like a stone in her stomach.

She picked at a loose thread on the comforter, her gaze drifting toward the window. The park across the street, usually alive with activity, was shrouded in a dull, grey haze.
