Maya stared at the text message on her phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she re-read the words. “Party cancelled. Sorry.” The words were so blunt, so devoid of emotion. Her vision blurred, and she blinked rapidly, willing the stinging sensation in her eyes to subside. She had spent weeks anticipating the gathering, the shared joy of friends and family. It was to be her first time celebrating a milestone in a long time.

She stood frozen in the middle of her living room, a place she usually found comfort in, but now felt like a cage. The carefully arranged floral centerpiece on the coffee table suddenly seemed ostentatious, a cruel reminder of what would not be.
