The vibrant confetti, scattered haphazardly across the table, seemed to taunt him. The invitation, with its carefully chosen font and elegant phrasing, now felt like a worthless scrap of paper in his hands. He re-read the message: “Unfortunately, the event is no longer going ahead.” His carefully prepared speech, now memorized, seemed to mock him. He had meticulously crafted every detail, from the appetizers to the ambient lighting.

He walked to the window, staring out at the darkening cityscape. The streetlights flickered to life, casting long, lonely shadows. His chest felt heavy, as if weighed down by an invisible force. He had anticipated the moment, the moment of shared celebration. Now, that moment was erased, replaced by an unsettling void. He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. He took a slow breath, counted to ten, and then slowly began to pick up the scattered confetti.
