“I thought we were…” James began, his voice cracking. He struggled to maintain eye contact with the other man, Alex, who sat across the table, explaining his own relationship with the woman they both thought they loved. The restaurant, once a place of romantic memories, now felt like a prison. The clatter of cutlery and the murmur of other conversations felt like a cruel symphony of indifference. James's shoulders slumped. He felt hollow, as if everything inside of him had been scooped out and discarded.
