“Magnifique!” The French judge’s pronouncement echoed in Beatrice’s mind. The winner was Chef Marcel with his "Eclairs de Lumière." Beatrice recognized it instantly. The same delicate choux pastry, the exact same coffee-infused cream filling. She felt her face flush, heat rising up her neck. Her hands clenched into fists, nails digging into her palms. She found herself standing, but unable to move, unable to speak, paralyzed by the recognition of the theft. The room swam, the bright lights blurred, as she watched the young chef celebrate his victory.
