Gemotions

The flickering screen illuminated Sarah’s face as she scrolled through the fake profile. Her daughter, Maya, laughing and carefree, posed with friends, attended parties, and lived a life Sarah knew nothing about. A coldness spread through her chest, making it hard to breathe.

She slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the silent house. The roast chicken, forgotten in the oven, was surely burning. Dinner, she realized, wouldn't be eaten.

Later, she found herself staring at Maya, who was happily chatting on the phone, oblivious to the turmoil brewing in her mother's heart. "Just making sure you’re doing your homework," Sarah croaked, her voice tight. Maya just gave a brief "Yup!" and continued her conversation.
