The vibrant chatter of the coffee shop was a welcome distraction from the silent tension back at the apartment. He’d shot down the idea of a pet without a second thought, his reasoning cold and calculated. I had poured my heart out, explaining how a dog could help with my loneliness. His dismissive attitude was like a slap in the face.

I stirred my coffee, watching the cream swirl and dissipate, mirroring the dissipating hope that the argument had left me with. The caffeine didn't seem to be working; I felt drained and numb.

He was probably already immersed in his work, completely forgetting the conversation, while I was left here, feeling like I’d been rebuffed in a way that felt personal, as if I had failed him.
