"This can't be happening," she thought, her voice stuck somewhere in her throat. Maya found him at his new job, a mechanic. Her heart leaped with excitement when she saw him. "Remember that time we rode our bikes all the way to the beach?" she said, her voice breathy. He looked at her, his hands still covered in grease, and shrugged. "Sorry, I'm drawing a blank." She could barely manage to stand. She felt the ground shift under her feet, and the shop blurred into a gray haze. She spun around, fighting back tears, and stumbled back onto the street.
