The photograph, creased and faded, lay on the table between them. James gestured to it. “Remember this?” he asked, his voice tight. The photo showed them, younger, grinning, holding fishing rods, a lake shimmering in the background. David studied the picture, his gaze distant. Finally, he shook his head. "No," he said softly. The reply, a flat, innocuous word, sliced through James. He leaned back in his chair, the room suddenly too small, too bright. A strange pressure began building in his temples, a physical manifestation of the ache that settled deep inside him.
