"Unbelievable," Mark muttered, his voice cracking. He ran a hand over his freshly shaved head, feeling the coldness of his scalp against his palm. He crumpled the paper in his hand with fury, the action a futile expression of his helplessness.

He kicked a small storage box across the living room, sending its contents scattering. He hated admitting failure. This was supposed to be his fresh start, a clean slate. Now, this… this was just another crushing blow.

He paced the room, each step echoing in the sudden emptiness. His throat constricted, and he felt a pressure building behind his eyes. He found himself staring out the window, at the bustling street below, a world he now felt disconnected from, an outsider.
