"The board is thrilled," the manager said, clapping Peter on the shoulder. Peter could barely register the words. Across the table, the competitor, Mr. Jones, was basking in the applause. His presentation included the data that Peter had spent months collecting, analysis, and writing. A bitter tang filled his mouth, a metallic taste he couldn’t swallow.

He excused himself abruptly, making his way to the men's room. He stared at his reflection, a stranger staring back. His eyes were wide, and his lips were a thin, tight line.

He splashed cold water on his face, hoping to wash away the feeling. It didn't work.
