The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, its subject line a stark, unpleasant intrusion into her otherwise mundane Tuesday. "Important Announcement Regarding University Status." Her breath hitched. She clicked on it, the words blurring as she scanned the contents. The university, her university, was shutting its doors at the end of the academic year. Her stomach clenched.

She slammed her laptop shut. The suddenness of it all was sickening. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to let them fall. She got up and began pacing her tiny dorm room, the worn carpet offering little comfort beneath her bare feet.

Her graduation was so close. She had spent the last three years in the library, in the labs, with friends, and now all of that might just be for naught. All of that might not matter, anymore.
