He stared out the window of his history lecture, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the campus. The professor droned on about the French Revolution, but David couldn’t focus. He replayed the Provost's words in his head: "Financial constraints… unsustainable operations… closure." He felt a coldness creep into his chest.

The weight of the impending announcement settled on him. He wanted to shout, to throw something, to just break the silence, but he couldn't. His fingers tapped a restless rhythm against the desk. He didn’t want to go back to his crummy apartment. He needed to avoid people.
