"Unbelievable," Maya muttered, staring at the notification on her phone. She was on the bus home, and the world seemed to have tilted off its axis. Her whole life, or so it felt, had been leading to this moment. She was on the verge of finally being somewhere.

The landscape outside blurred, indistinguishable from the chaos churning within her. She clenched her hands into fists, nails digging into her palms. Her carefully planned future felt like it was crumbling into dust. She wanted to scream.

The bus rattled and swayed. She felt a wave of nausea.
