Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest inside Amelia. She'd found it tucked away in the back of the closet, a battered leather-bound journal: David's bucket list. The first item, scrawled in his familiar, loopy handwriting, was "Climb Mount Kilimanjaro - *with someone special*". Amelia traced the words with a trembling finger, the casual inclusion of "someone special" a small, sharp shard of glass embedded in her chest.

She slammed the journal shut. The air in their shared apartment suddenly felt thin, suffocating. Years they'd spent together, building a life, and the most significant adventure on his list involved someone else. She walked to the window, watching the rain blur the city lights, each drop a stinging tear she refused to shed.

Her phone buzzed, a text from David: "Running late. Dinner at 8?" She considered not replying, letting him stew in the silence she suddenly craved. But she typed back, "Fine." The lie hung in the air, thick and heavy.
