The aroma of dinner, usually a comfort, now felt like a mockery. Sarah had been cooking, but now her stomach churned. Mark was on the phone, in the bedroom, behind a closed door. The quick, low tones cut through the sound of the sizzling food, causing her to freeze.

She stood frozen in the kitchen, a wooden spoon still clutched in her hand. The silence after the call felt immense, pressing down on her. The air crackled with a tension she could almost taste. Her hands began to tremble.

She needed to know, to break the silence. With a shaky breath, she began to walk to the closed door, the wooden spoon clattering to the floor.
