The house seemed too quiet. The silence was louder than any noise, each tick of the clock a hammer blow. He had taken the call in the laundry room, the door slammed shut. Her hands felt clammy as she replayed the conversation she'd overheard, over and over.

She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes, and a wave of heat washed over her. She paced the length of the living room, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. Her head throbbed.

She had to get out. She threw open the front door, the night air a welcome blast. The familiar street suddenly seemed foreign, the ordinary houses now menacing.
