He stared at the documents, the print blurring before his eyes. It was a cruel trick, a cosmic joke that wasn't remotely funny. The doctor's calm explanation washed over him, completely unheard. A cold sweat erupted on his back, chilling him to the bone. He felt like his insides were turning to ice.

He wanted to shout, to tear the papers to shreds, to obliterate the evidence of this horrifying mistake. He clenched his fists, knuckles white, and squeezed his eyes shut, trying to shut out the reality that was crashing down on him. His breath hitched in his throat, each inhale a struggle.

He felt a deep tremor run through him, starting in his toes and working its way up his body. He felt a primal urge to flee, to escape the confines of the office, to run as far and as fast as he could. He sprang up from the chair, nearly knocking it over, and stumbled towards the door, the world tilting precariously with every step.
