The email pinged at 3:17 PM. The chime itself was like a shrill scream. Michael froze, his fingers hovering over the mouse. His breath caught in his throat. He read the words: "Effective Immediately." He was being moved to Facilities.

A hot flush started at the back of his neck, spreading like wildfire. He could feel his pulse pounding in his ears. His hands started to tremble, and he clenched them into fists, nails digging into his palms. Facilities? He, Michael, the rising star in Human Resources?

He shot out of his chair, knocking it over in his haste. He paced the small area of his cubicle, muttering under his breath. The air seemed to have thickened, making it harder to breathe. “This can’t be happening,” he choked, the words barely audible. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. He staggered, catching himself against the edge of his desk.
