The vibrant colors of the party supplies seemed to taunt her from the closet. The news of the party’s cancellation had hit Olivia like a physical blow. She'd been so excited to celebrate her promotion with her friends and family. Her sister, who was responsible for the arrangements, stood opposite her, head bowed.

A tremor ran through her body, starting in her toes and spreading upwards. Her palms began to sweat, and her breath quickened. The silence in the kitchen was deafening, amplified by the pounding of her heart. She wanted to yell, to demand an explanation, but her throat felt constricted, making it impossible to form words.

She turned away, stumbling towards the counter, her hands searching for something, anything, to ground her. She needed to breathe, to find a way to contain the rising tide of emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
