The decorations, still up from last week's Christmas party, felt like accusatory sentinels. Thomas had been so looking forward to his 40th birthday bash. His partner, Emily, now stood before him, her face a mask of misery. "The venue cancelled," she stammered, her voice thin and reedy.

He couldn't speak, couldn't breathe. His chest felt tight, constricted by an invisible band. He ran his hands over his face, pushing back the tears. He wanted to lash out, to scream, to break something, anything to alleviate the crushing weight in his gut.
