It was the salt, she knew it. She had forgotten the salt. The critic, that cruel, venomous creature, had focused on the scallops. And she had, in a moment of panicked distraction, forgotten the salt. Amelia, head chef and owner of a struggling bistro, slammed her fist on the stainless steel counter, the reverberation a jarring echo in the silent kitchen. "Damn it," she hissed, the word laced with a bitterness that tasted like ash in her mouth.

She paced, back and forth, the same tile square her shoes had been treading for years. Each step felt like a hammer blow against her already fragile composure. The restaurant was her life, her everything, and now… now it was being dissected, eviscerated by a man with a pen and a callous heart. The words, "amateurish," "lacking finesse," echoed in her mind.

Amelia grabbed a bottle of Pinot Noir, uncorking it with a furious twist of the corkscrew. She took a long, desperate swig, the wine doing nothing to quell the frantic thumping in her chest. She needed to do something, anything, to stop the world from collapsing around her.
