“Right, let’s get this over with,” Daniel mumbled, his voice tight. He forced himself to walk through the front door, the wood groaning beneath his weight. His sister, Olivia, was practically bouncing with a manic energy, already taking photographs of everything.

His stomach lurched. He felt a desperate urge to run away. The thought of sorting through the contents of the house was overwhelming.

His hands were clammy, and he kept rubbing them together. He wanted to cry out, to demand they leave, that this wasn’t happening. He clenched his jaw, trying to stop the tremors that threatened to overtake him.

The living room felt too small, the air too heavy. He took a shaky breath, trying to regain control, but the house was a monster, and he was being swallowed whole.
