"This isn't real," Amelia whispered, her voice barely audible. She reread the article, the words mocking her. Each sentence was a fresh stab. Her legs felt like jelly, and she sank to the floor.

Her head was throbbing, a dull, relentless ache. She remembered the fan letter, the praise, the admiration. All of it felt tainted, poisoned. She felt a burning sensation, like fire spreading through her veins.

She wanted to laugh, but the sound caught in her throat, morphing into a strangled gasp. She wanted to scream, but no sound came out. She just sat there, rocking back and forth, feeling utterly lost.
