Eliza’s vision swam. The color drained from her face as she looked at her phone. Two calendar entries, identical, both marked “Birthday Party.” It was a cruel joke, a cosmic prank played specifically on her. Her hands felt clumsy, her fingers fumbling as she attempted to untangle the party invitations from her purse. She felt as though the air had suddenly become too thin.

She grabbed a half-eaten sandwich from the counter and took a huge bite, chewing furiously, as if trying to quell the rising tide of… everything. The sandwich disintegrated in her mouth, but she didn’t even notice. Her eyes darted around the room, landing on mundane objects with an intensity that felt alien. The ticking clock on the wall seemed to amplify the internal pressure building inside her.

“This… this can’t be happening,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to rip the invitations to shreds. But she couldn't. She just stood there, paralyzed, a prisoner of this absurd situation. The floor felt like it was tilting, the walls closing in.
